Quick answer: Choose a bite sleeve by the dog's stage and your sport. Puppies start on a soft puppy sleeve or pillow, then a semi-firm puppy sleeve. Young dogs up to about 12 months move to an intermediate sleeve. Adult IGP dogs work on a trial-style sleeve with a jute or French linen cover, while PSA and Mondioring dogs train inner-arm bites on a Belgian bite sleeve. Hidden sleeves and hidden bite suits come last, for experienced dogs and professional decoys.
Match the sleeve to the dog
The most common sleeve mistake is going too hard, too early. A firm sleeve on a young dog can flatten drive and teach a shallow, careful grip that takes months to fix. A sleeve that is too soft for a mature dog gives no resistance and nothing to fight.
The rule we use: move up only when the dog takes the current equipment with a calm, full grip and no hesitation. Equipment follows the dog's development, not the calendar and not the helper's preference.
Stage 1: Puppy bite sleeves
The first sleeve should be soft, light and easy to bite. The Puppy Bite Sleeve is a soft starter that measures 20 by 30 cm and doubles as a bite pillow when you slip a hand inside. Its thin bite surface helps a puppy learn to close its jaws and commit to a full-mouth grip.
Next comes the Puppy Bite Sleeve with BAR. It has a semi-firm bite surface, an internal bar handle for precise helper control, a 10 cm (4 in) bite depth that rewards a deep grip, and it fits either arm at 600 g. For puppies and adolescents ready for more texture, the reinforced jute puppy sleeve runs to the elbow, weighs 1.2 kg and has a 23 cm bite area.
Timing depends on the individual dog. Work around teething and maturity, keep sessions short, and stop while the puppy still wants more.
Stage 2: Intermediate bite sleeves
The intermediate bite sleeve is built for young dogs up to about 12 months that have passed the introduction phase and are ready for structured bite work. You choose a reinforced jute or PowerTex bite surface. The angled bite bar guides the dog into a full-mouth grip, the outer round handle and inner padded handle give the helper options, a hard plastic shoulder guard adds protection, and the bottom half is replaceable.
The Premium Jute dual-handle sleeve bridges the gap to adult work. At 60 cm long with a 20 cm bite area and 1.7 kg, it works as a sleeve or converts to a bite pillow with its rear handle. That makes the pillow-to-sleeve transition smoother because the dog keeps the same jute feel.
Stage 3: Adult sport sleeves
IGP and IPO sleeves
For IGP work, a trial-style sleeve with a curved bite area and a replaceable cover is standard. Our IPO/IGP professional sleeve comes for the left or right arm, with or without a jute or French linen cover. Pick the arm you present to the dog, and many helpers keep both.
Belgian bite sleeves for PSA and Mondioring
A Belgian bite sleeve is designed for inner-arm targeting, the bite picture PSA and Mondioring dogs need. The standard version comes in five resistance levels: Level 1 blue for the earliest puppy stage, Level 2 orange (very soft), Level 3 yellow (soft-medium) for beginner adults, Level 4 red for experienced adults and Level 5 black (extra firm) for elite, high-drive dogs. The short version is 43 cm with levels 2 to 5 and concentrates the bite on the inner arm.
For decoys who want more coverage than a forearm sleeve, the PSA bite sleeve protects the arm, armpit and chest and locks in place with a body strap.
| Stage | Sleeve | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| First bites | Soft puppy sleeve | Young puppies, sleeve or pillow mode |
| Early puppy | Puppy sleeve with BAR | Semi-firm surface, helper control, either arm |
| Young dog | Intermediate sleeve | Up to about 12 months, jute or PowerTex |
| Transition | Premium jute dual-handle | Young adults moving from pillow to sleeve |
| Adult IGP | IPO/IGP professional sleeve | Trial-style work, replaceable cover |
| Adult PSA and Mondioring | Belgian-style sleeve | Inner-arm targeting, five resistance levels |
| Advanced | Hidden sleeve or hidden bite suit | Experienced dogs, professional decoys |
Stage 4: Hidden sleeves and hidden bite suits
Dogs trained only on visible equipment can learn to bite the equipment. Put them in front of a person in a jacket and jeans and some hesitate, circle or disengage. Hidden equipment tests whether the dog engages the person.
The hidden French linen bite sleeve is worn under ordinary clothing, adjusts with nylon straps and Velcro, and fits either arm. We also carry a synthetic hidden sleeve with imported Belgian bite material and a laced universal-fit hidden sleeve.
For full-body scenario work, the K9-Industries hidden bite suit is a concealed French linen suit with flexible plastic reinforcement in the main impact zones. It comes in one standard size that adjusts with hook-and-loop straps at the arms, waist and legs, and it is worn under civilian-style clothing.
Hidden equipment is not a shortcut. It belongs to experienced dogs that already have a confident, full grip on visible equipment, and to professional decoys working in a controlled environment. Novice and intermediate trainers should not use it. Handled badly, it can cause serious injury.
Full bite suits
If the dog targets legs, torso and arms, as in PSA, Mondioring and French Ring, the decoy needs a full suit. The PSA and Mondioring bite suit is sized by the decoy's height and weight, and if you fall between sizes, size up to leave room for the padding. For arm-only work such as IGP, a sleeve is usually enough. Suits and suit accessories are in our bite suit collection.
Jute, French linen or synthetic
- Jute: coarse, rugged and traditional. The texture invites a full, deep bite. Heavier, and it needs to dry fully between sessions.
- French linen: lighter and smoother, with a competition feel. It compresses under the bite and is gentle on teeth.
- Synthetic and PowerTex: durable surfaces for heavy use. Choose by the feel you want and how hard the sleeve will work.
Whatever the material, air-dry the sleeve after every session and store it somewhere dry and ventilated. Browse every option in our bite sleeves collection.
FAQ
What bite sleeve should a beginner buy?
Buy for the dog's stage. A puppy starts on a puppy sleeve. A young dog up to about 12 months fits an intermediate sleeve. A green adult in PSA or Mondioring often starts at Level 3 yellow on a Belgian-style sleeve. Work under an experienced decoy either way.
What is a Belgian bite sleeve?
A sleeve built for inner-arm bites, the target picture used in PSA and Mondioring. It comes in graded resistance levels so the sleeve can firm up as the dog develops.
What is a hidden bite suit used for?
Scenario training. The decoy wears it under normal clothing so the dog learns to engage a person, not visible gear. It is professional equipment for experienced dogs and decoys.
Should I choose jute or French linen?
Jute is rugged and traditional with a coarse grip. French linen is lighter and smoother with a competition feel. Both build a correct grip, so choose by feel and use.
When should my dog move to a firmer sleeve?
When it takes the current sleeve with a calm, full grip and no hesitation. Moving up too early can flatten a young dog's drive.
Do I need a full bite suit for IGP?
Usually not. IGP bite work targets the arm, so a sleeve covers it. Full suits are for sports where the dog bites the legs and body.
