Most handlers carry more than one leash. A 6 ft lead for obedience and daily walks, something short for close control, and a long line for tracking or recall work. Here is how the range breaks down.

Choosing a working dog leash

  • Length. The 6 ft (180 cm) leads are the standard for heel work and walking. The 7 ft (210 cm) 7-in-1 leashes, in leather or PowerFlex, give you several setups from one leash. Short leashes, including a 12 in (30 cm) one with a Nappa-padded handle, keep the dog tight at your side.
  • Material. Full-grain leather with brass hardware is quiet and easy on the hands. Rubberized nylon gives a full grip when the line is wet or muddy. PowerFlex comes as a 6 ft lead, a slim 13 mm version and a flat slip leash.
  • Hands-free. The free-hand police and military leash is waterproof with a quick-release. The Premium Tactical Dog Leash is made of military-grade nylon.
  • Slip leads. PowerFlex, nylon and full-grain leather slip leads put leash and collar in one piece for kennel moves and quick handling.
  • Retractable. Flexi Giant M and L with 8 m tape for off-duty walks.

Match the leash to the collar and to the job. See working dog collars, or narrow the list to leather dog leashes or nylon leashes. The K9 PowerFlex collection has the full PowerFlex line.
