A crate is where a working dog rests between sessions, so it has to fit the dog and the place it will live. The model in this collection is the Fortress Insulated K9 Crate, with insulated walls 2.4 in thick.

How to choose a dog crate

  • Size. The dog should be able to stand, turn around and lie down stretched out. Measure from nose to base of tail, and from floor to top of head with the dog standing, then add a few inches to each.
  • Walls. Insulated walls are the main reason to pick this type of crate over a wire crate. On the Fortress they are 2.4 in thick.
  • Location. Think about where the crate will stand: indoors, in a kennel building, in a garage or in the back of a vehicle. Measure that space before you order.

Crate training goes faster when the crate is a good place to be. Feed meals in it, give a chew toy such as a KONG Extreme, and keep the first sessions short. For dogs that also sleep outside the crate, see our elevated aluminum dog beds. Water bowls, treat pouches and other extras are in dog accessories.
