A leather collar is the one most handlers leave on the dog all day. It takes the leash, looks right with a leather lead and gets easier to handle as it breaks in. Choosing one comes down to width, layers and padding.
How to choose a leather dog collar
- Width. The Classic full-grain collars at 25 mm (1 in) and 30 mm (1.2 in) suit smaller and medium dogs. 40 mm is the usual width for a Shepherd, Malinois or Rottweiler. The Extra-Wide 2 in (50 mm) collar is made for giant breeds.
- 1-ply or 2-ply. The Classic 1-Ply at 40 mm is a single layer of full-grain leather. The Heavy-Duty 2-Ply collars use two layers, one with brass hardware and one with a control handle.
- Padding. The Padded Leather Dog Collar has a soft Nappa lining. The Royal Braided collar is Nappa-padded too, with a braided outside.
- Handle. If you need to take hold of the dog at a door, in a vehicle or next to other dogs, the 2-ply collar with control handle puts a grip right at the neck.
Measure the neck where the collar will sit and allow two fingers of room under it. Then pair the collar with one of our leather dog leashes. For waterproof and tactical models, see all working dog collars, and for prong training, Herm Sprenger prong collars.
