Bite Wedges/ Bite Pillows

Bite pillows and bite wedges give a young dog a wide, flat target to fill with the whole mouth, and give the helper handles to present and fight with. The range runs from puppy starters to three-handle pads for strong adult dogs.

How to choose a bite pillow or wedge

Pick by stage of training, not by the size of the dog. A puppy or a dog new to bite work starts on the Puppy & Beginner Bite Pillow in French linen. The goal at this point is a calm, full grip, and a pillow makes it easy to reward the back teeth instead of a nip with the front ones.

Once the grip is full and the dog pulls back into the fight, move up. The Advanced Bite Pillow is double-layer French linen, and the three-handle bite pad is made for adult and strong dogs. More handles give the helper more ways to hold the target: flat and still for targeting, or angled and moving when you want the dog to counter and regrip. The French Linen Bite Wedge, also three-handle, is sold as a bite developer for the same middle stage.

  • Pillows: 8 x 8 in square with one handle, puppy and beginner, advanced double-layer
  • Wedge and pad: three-handle French linen wedge, three-handle pad for adult and strong dogs
  • Rolls: French linen in small, medium and large (triple handle), reinforced jute with two handles, and a figure-8 tug in 3 sizes

Rolls are the easiest way to adjust diameter as the dog's mouth and grip develop. For more shapes, see the full range of bite tugs. When the grip holds up under pressure on a pad, the usual next step is a puppy or intermediate bite sleeve. If you sew or repair your own equipment, the same French linen bite fabric is sold by the meter.
